Canada is squirming between old ties and new postures, and these editorial cartoons call out the awkward, often performative moves from Ottawa to Alberta to the U.S. Each piece tries to mix bite and silliness to show how leaders sell identity, markets and values while ordinary people get pushed around. The goal is to keep you the readers amused and thinking at the same time. This week I’m keeping things brief - It’s May, and there’s gardens to tend. Here’s my week that was in editorial cartoons.

Tuesday, May 5, 2026 - Beaver Goes European, Eh?

Carney’s “most European of non-European countries” line gets lampooned as a fashion change rather than a strategy. The beaver swaps its football gear for a Barcelona shirt and a baguette, poking fun at how Canada sometimes wears foreign affectations to signal independence from the U.S. The cartoon says: smart geopolitics or just a costume party? Either way it’s a neat poke at performative diplomacy.

Wednesday, May 6, 2026 - Language Burn Notice

The handover at Rideau Hall becomes a comic sketch about scrutiny and language politics. Mary Simon’s sardonic warning and Louise Arbour’s bilingual reply highlight how the GG’s role is supposed to represent diversity while getting chewed up by official-language expectations. The image lands a sting: good intentions meet a small, noisy public that loves to complain.

Thursday, May 7, 2026 - Market Rollercoaster, Hold On Tight

Trump on the rollercoaster turns market moves into a carnival ride with real-world costs. “MARKET MANIPULATION” screams the track as MAGA followers plunge after his shout of “SELL!” It’s a blunt gag about political theatrics influencing oil and financial pain for ordinary people, with a sideways jab at the disconnect between diplomacy and showmanship.

Friday, May 8, 2026 - Alberta Going for a New Look?

“ALBERICA” turns Alberta’s crest into American stripes to underline a worrying shift toward U.S.-style partisanship. The WEXIT paint can and the familiar faces imply that some leaders are fine with remaking provincial identity for political gain. Separation is no biggie if it means joining MAGAland. The cartoon is a warning and a roast at once: identity is being rebranded, and not everyone will like the new logo.

Saturday, May 9, 2026 - Happy Mother’s Day, Now Where’s the Care?

Mother’s Day becomes a sharp critique of policy versus sentiment. The pulled-from-print cartoon pairs a saccharine greeting with spilled documents called “Big Beautiful Maternal Health Policies” to show the gap between rhetoric and real support for women’s health. It’s both funny and furious, and the censorship angle only makes the point louder.

My final cartoon of the week was spiked from print. I get it: newspapers are clinging to subscribers, so the old rules on swear words still apply like they did when I started in the early 1990s. I’ve had cartoons killed before, one from 2005 was even lame enough to lead a chapter in the oft cited book Killed Cartoons: Casualties from the War on Free Expression, by David Wallis. Ironically, journalists and editors can be some of the filthiest‑mouthed people I know. “Too obscene for newspapers,” they said of this one. Spiked from print, it feels almost criminal to make readers imagine vulgarity, yet here we are, sharing it online instead. It stings, but it’s part of the job. I enjoy the security of an in‑house gig, though I’d rather not have work rejected, and we are still expected to push the envelope right up to the line between accept and reject. Some cartoonists wear a spike as a badge of honour, but because freelancers outnumber staffers, and since they’re not beholden to editorial overlords, the drama of getting cartoons spiked is less common. Rant over. Next week brings more daylight, less keyboard battling and more fresh air. I’ll be back with more snide for the politicos.

All this talk of Donald Trump and his arch that has stirred laughter and mockery (here’s mine) had me thinking of another arch from a bygone era that provoked controversy, one I doubt the incurious President or his ill informed yes men would know about. Designed by Decimus Burton as a triumphal gateway commemorating Britain’s Napoleonic victories and as a grand ceremonial entrance to the royal parks, it was built between 1826 and 1830 (as long as the length of time it takes to get through a single Presidential term) at Hyde Park Corner and was known simply as the triumphal arch. The name shifted to the Duke of Wellington’s Arch as public and press association with Wellington’s Napoleonic leadership attached his name and political symbolism to it.

Despite some of his faults, including a notorious temper, political obstinacy and an autocratic manner, a glorious archway bearing the Duke’s name seemed warranted. In 1846, however, Matthew Cotes Wyatt’s gigantic equestrian statue of Wellington was perched atop the arch and that excess exposed how glorification can go too far: critics attacked its scale and poor fit with Burton’s design, Queen Victoria complained it blocked the view of Buckingham Palace and cartoonist John Leech mocked it in Punch.

The Duke died in 1852, and despite criticism it remained on the arch until 1882 because of public attachment, political sensitivity about slighting the duke, bureaucratic delays, and the cost and difficulty of removal. The unpopular Wyatt statue was removed from Hyde Park Corner and re‑erected at Aldershot in 1885. The move defused royal and public complaints, found an Army sponsor, and eased disposal costs. The Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, backed and helped secure the relocation. After the move to Aldershot the bronze suffered neglect, weathering and some vandal damage. It was later cleaned, repaired and treated by specialists to stabilize and protect it.

Wellington’s Arch caused quite a stir back in the day, and it’s a good lesson for us now. The new arch planned for the 250th anniversary looks more like a monument to Donald Trump’s ego than a celebration of independence. While he might see himself as a great leader like Wellington or Napoleon, his actions, especially ignoring environmental issues and stirring up global tensions, don’t really deserve a hero’s welcome. Just like the fuss over Wellington’s statue, this new plan should be checked out carefully to make sure it brings people together instead of just pumping up one person’s image

This week intertwined national and global events, starting with chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner when a shooter attempted to assassinate President Trump, marking the third recent attempt. The incident sparked debates over justification of Trump’s ballroom proposal as a safer venue, to whether the whole event (and the Butler, Penn. shooting) was staged. But it was the Royal visit to The United States that provided a brief calm, sandwiched between the Saturday night’s Poseidon Adventure live drama from the Washington Hilton, and Trump’s vendettas against figures like James Comey and Jimmy Kimmel. Late in the week, news broke that I need to catch up on: the Supreme Court's decision on the Voting Rights Act, sparking debates about redistricting and raising concerns about echoes of Jim Crow-era practices. My editorial cartoons shifted focus from skewering politicians to focusing on the masses, critiquing public apathy towards climate change and poor governance in Ontario, questioning whether people will engage in the next election. Editorial cartoonists typically target individual powers, but sometimes we’re called on to satirize swaths of humanity driven by selfishness, apathy and ignorance. Stay tuned for those cartoons as the week unfolds.

Tuesday April 28, 2026 | Kings and Wannabes

King Charles III’s visit to the U.S. underscores the bond between the UK and America, offering a reminder of shared history amid political chaos. I drew a cartoon depicting Trump as a “wannabe emperor,” clad in flashy robes, meeting King Charles. It mocks his craving for accolades, like the “Nobel” medal from María Corina Machado, and features smaller medals referencing attempts on his life. King Charles’s quip about a “delighted” King George III adds a twist, highlighting Trump’s royal pretensions and his obsession with a British accent. This cartoon was drawn the day before the visit began. There were a couple of expected facepalm moments thanks to Trump, but it was the King’s speech to Congress that really stood out. It was widely well-received, with wonderfully scripted talking points, including a nod to the Magna Carta. This historical document, which set limits on executive power, is echoed in the U.S. Constitution, although recent instances of executive overreach have raised concerns. The King addressed contentious issues, highlighting the GOP’s resistance, the importance of protecting the environment, defending Ukraine, and the strength of unity provided by NATO. Who else in the world could possibly get away with uttering the phrase “by Jove” in any speech other than King Charles III?

Wednesday, April 29, 2026 | Piecing Together a Concept

Prime Minister Mark Carney launched the Canada Strong Fund, a $25 billion initiative akin to a sovereign wealth fund, aimed at boosting nation-building projects. Inspired by Quebec’s Caisse de dépôt, it seeks financial returns and economic growth. While Carney’s reputation brings hope, past issues with similar funds raise transparency concerns. Canadians are urged to focus on oversight rather than politics for success. My cartoon illustrates this challenge with a Carney-like figure tackling a 25-billion-piece puzzle, highlighting the complexity of establishing such a massive fund amid Canada’s deficit. This endeavour echoes the previous Liberal government’s efforts, giving off a somewhat half-baked feel, almost like a gimmick. Mark Carney has garnered support thanks to his impressive credentials as a central banker in two countries. However, the lack of detailed information leaves a bad impression and patience is wearing thin.

Thursday, April 30, 2026 | Tanking Free Speech

The Trump administration’s focus on silencing comedian Jimmy Kimmel instead of addressing issues like the Iran crisis and rising living costs shows a troubling misuse of power. Ironically, this attack on satire happens just before World Press Freedom Day, boosting Kimmel’s platform and highlighting the importance of free speech. My cartoon captures this by depicting Trump in a chaotic tank, symbolizing his aggressive foreign policy, yelling at Kimmel, who’s happy to trade jokes for ratings. The FCC flag waves as Ali Khamenei watches with popcorn, underscoring how media attention fuels both leaders. I also included a nod to the 8647 story, highlighting how Trump targets critics like James Comey and Kimmel, who are just doing their jobs with satire.

Friday, May 1, 2026 | Rescue Mission Misguided

With oil prices soaring due to geopolitical tensions and the Strait of Hormuz blockade, Canada’s focus has shifted from climate action to economic concerns. Despite underlying anxiety, public prioritization of climate change has waned, spurred by policy shifts like the “Trump Effect” promoting fossil fuels. My cartoon captures this “fractured reality” by showing emergency crews rushing to “save” a $125 oil barrel, symbolizing our desperate reliance on fossil fuels. Meanwhile, a battered Earth sits ignored, questioning the lost urgency for its survival. This piece highlights how short-term economic fears overshadow the pressing long-term climate crisis. Someone on social media challenged me, claiming this cartoon was created with AI. After a brief back-and-forth, their accusatory tone softened. It made me realize that people are struggling to distinguish between genuine art and AI-generated content due to the flood of material on social media. I think it's time for another write-up on this topic soon, because my feeling on the technology has changed since I last wrote about it.

Doug Ford’s time as Ontario’s Premier, marked by strategic centrism and weak opposition, is now facing challenges. Controversies like buying a private jet and tweaking FOI laws have stirred voter sentiment, with polls showing the Liberals gaining ground. My cartoon likens Ontario voters to the “Lapsed Voter of Ontario” (Apatheticus ontariensis), drawing parallels with creatures like the Fijian cicada that awaken every eight years. It captures that jarring moment when voters, suddenly aware, find themselves “bugged” by issues like poll numbers and transparency. This lighthearted take highlights how sporadic political engagement can lead to frustration when election season returns.

Monday April 27, 1996 | Coppsiversary

Ahh… newspaper! Reflecting back to 1996, when Sheila Copps resigned her seat over a matter of integrity, it’s crazy to realize it’s been 30 years. She took that step because the Liberals couldn’t scrap the GST as promised, really showing her commitment to accountability. Sheila and I are both from Hamilton, and back then, she was a major figure in Ottawa as Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s Deputy Prime Minister. Hamilton once had a lineup of influential politicians like John Munro and Stan Keyes, but it’s been a while since those Liberal red Hamilton days. Above is a caricature of Sheila that got featured within a Toronto Star “Sheila Copps: You Must Resign” editorial, which was a huge highlight for me and helped me catch the attention of the Hamilton Spectator, where I’ve happily worked ever since. Sheila provided plenty of inspiration (link to ancient archives here), leading to more of my editorial cartoons in the Star. Today, several of my cartoons from the Hamilton Spectator also appear in the Toronto Star every Sunday and Monday. I owe a lot of my career’s path to those early days and to Sheila. Thanks, Sheila, wherever you are!

Editorial cartoonists push us to wake up, and thinking about figures like, and 2005 me wouldn’t believe I’m saying this, but… Sheila Copps reminds us why integrity in public service is crucial. Staying informed and involved is key to building a future that reflects our true values. Seriously, apathy is not cool! Yes, high energy prices are tough, but we can’t let that make us forget about our responsibility to the planet. I’m not sure what headlines next week will bring, but as we step into a new month, let’s embrace the transition nature offers. Whether it’s the blossoms of spring in the north or the brilliant colours of autumn in the south, may it keep us inspired and positive.

In the business of editorial cartooning, keeping up with trending words and notions is key. This past week, “gravy plane,” “Donnyland,” and “ragging the puck” caught my eye. I’m careful about jumping on bandwagons, especially with catchy phrases from politicians. Take “gravy plane.” NDP leader Marit Stiles used it to mock Doug Ford’s spending, playing off his “gravy train” line. It’s a clever way to point out what she sees as hypocrisy. But I like to steer clear of politicians’ lines unless I’m countering them. So, I went with “Air Folks One” as a twist on “Air Ford One,” inspired by a Toronto Star piece. Then there’s “Donnyland,” which popped up in a weird NYT story about a Ukraine strategy to stroke King Trump’s ego. It was hard to tell if it was serious or a joke. It got global attention but didn’t really stick. I thought about using it in my Friday cartoon but ended up just mentioning it in a footnote down in the bottom right corner of my Friday cartoon. It reminds me of when “Little Marco” Rubio made a jab at Trump’s hand size during a GOP debate over a decade ago. It was a dig at Trump’s privileged background. Everyone knows the joke now, but no one credits Rubio for it. It’s like he tossed a pebble that turned into a boulder. While “gravy plane” is still big in Canada, “Donnyland” quickly got international buzz because of its links to bigger issues. As a cartoonist, it’s a roll of the dice when using these viral terms, deciding if they really fit the story I want to tell. The week began with the story now popularly known as Ford’s notorious gravy plane. I highlighted a fascinating contrast between two government decisions. The Ontario government quickly decided to spend $28.9 million on a private jet for Premier Doug Ford, only to backtrack and sell it when the public reacted strongly. This impulsive move is worlds apart from the never-ending debate over renovations at 24 Sussex Drive, the Prime Minister’s residence. The cartoon I drew took a playful jab at this with a “jet-house” hybrid, poking fun at the absurdity of the situation. Imagine Doug Ford as a slick salesman trying to sell the jet to a wary Mark Carney. It’s a funny way to show how Ontario’s hasty decision-making clashes with the federal government’s fear of criticism, highlighting a lack of transparency to more lucid leadership in managing public funds.

I focused on the Trump administration’s surreal “negotiations” with Iran. The aggressive tactics are like a bull in a china shop, causing more harm than good. In my cartoon, Uncle Sam is depicted with a Pinocchio nose, symbolizing the deceptive facade of strength in these talks. Sorry Uncle Sam, but this is how you’re viewed as the official mascot for the planet’s newest rogue state. JD Vance looks frustrated after failed discussions, while advisors Kushner and Witkoff stand by. The exaggerated nose reaching above an illusion of ‘peace talks’ underscores the lack of genuine diplomacy. With the Strait of Hormuz blockaded and tensions and scarcity of supplies rising, the administration’s reliance on political appointees instead of seasoned diplomats is a recipe for disaster, both electorally and geopolitically. The only hope lies in a temporary de-escalation to stave off chaos before the midterms. Good luck Donald, the idea of winning seems to be going so well right now!

I tackled Canada’s tricky trade negotiations with the U.S. under Mark Carney’s guidance, which feels like having to pay just to enter a store, capturing the transactional vibe of dealing with the U.S. administration. In my cartoon, Howard Lutnick plays the “Kleptco” greeter, demanding tributes from Canadian officials like Dominic LeBlanc. This setup pokes fun at how formal agreements like CUSMA have taken a backseat to a pay-to-play system. Lutnick, often mirroring Trump’s style, recently slammed Canada’s trade strategy, bluntly saying “they suck” and likening negotiating with the U.S. to buying a Costco membership: “You have to pay before you can shop.” Yet, unlike Costco, where you pay once, it feels like Canadians are constantly reaching for their wallets just to walk down the metaphorical meat aisle. People often poke fun at Trump’s crew, but Lutnick stands out for Canadians. There was an added treat watching him squirm while discussing his ties to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein when he appeared before Congress this past week. His Sunday morning show appearances are a master class in spinning trade nonsense, especially when paired with Trump’s ambassador to Ottawa, Pete Hoekstra. Together, they remind Canada to sit tight, like waiting out a storm, and see what changes the midterms might bring to Congress. The Canadian delegation, loaded with offerings, highlights the anxiety of navigating a world where trade feels more like a protection racket than a partnership.

I explored President Trump’s focus on building a grand arch in Washington, D.C., amidst pressing global issues. The “Arc de Trump” project, featuring busts of family and allies like Putin and Netanyahu, feels like a vanity project overshadowing real crises. In my cartoon, Trump stands in front of this golden monument, ironically dismissing urgent matters like the Ukraine conflict and domestic struggles. This piece critiques how personal glorification is taking precedence over genuine leadership, with the Commission of Fine Arts, stacked with loyalists, ready to approve. It’s a take on how architectural distractions are replacing the essential work of diplomacy… and just doing the job of governing.

I highlighted Canada’s strategic patience, often called “ragging the puck,” as a smart response to the unpredictability of the Trump administration. By avoiding quick concessions and focusing on long-term goals, Canada aims to keep its leverage while dealing with economic pressures. This approach means looking to the EU and China for diversification and learning from other U.S. allies. In my cartoon, I used a hockey metaphor to show Prime Minister Mark Carney skating smoothly around a “Tariffs” hole in the ice, representing unfair U.S. trade tactics. With “Playoffs” at centre ice, I referenced Carney’s analogy that in the “big game” of trade, Canada needs to stickhandle carefully. The idea was to show that while the U.S. sets traps, Carney is making a calculated effort to navigate them and come out on top.

This past week was crucial for checking in on U.S. trade talks. If things go smoothly, we might see lots of noise but no real action over the next six months. The Trump administration is caught up in its own messes, so Canada’s issues with the U.S. will probably stay the same instead of getting worse. This gives us a chance to focus on boosting our economy by trading more between provinces, expanding manufacturing and agriculture, and exporting natural resources globally. As for King Charles III, this isn’t just the UK’s moment to shine or stumble in front of Trump. I’m curious to see how the King handles the unpredictable President, having dealt with many leaders before. Trump is upset with Kier Starmer for not backing him and is already stirring trouble by questioning the UK’s control of the Falklands ahead of the King’s visit. It should be entertaining and great material for satire next week.

The week passed with more than just the dominant distraction of our times. While it was impossible to ignore the U.S. president’s latest antics, a pivotal moment unfolded in Canada when recent defections and by-elections shifted the federal seat count and returned the Liberals to a majority government after nearly six years of hung parliaments. Things are going to be a bit more stable, and therefore, troublesome for political observers as events are likely to become probably somewhat boring. Here in Ontario we can count on a bumbling premier to keep satire chugging, and I found myself targeting Doug Ford as often as Donald Trump. I can almost sense whatever rabid provincial following the PCs enjoy ready to diagnose me with FDS (Ford Derangement Syndrome.) Let us review the week in cartoons

I watched the week’s big story about Donald Trump spar with Pope Leo XIV and thought, wow, I guess this is what naturally must follow a message threatening to wipe out an entire civilization. I suppose to go after the Pope and then send out a meme depicting oneself as Jesus the saviour should not shock any of us. His explanation that he intended it to cast him as a healing doctor just made the whole Trump duel with the Pope even more bizarre. Given article 25 of the Constitution hasn’t been triggered seems folks have moved on quite magically, until the world wakes up to the next unhinged shocker posted to social media. In my cartoon I show Trump ranting on Truth Social from atop a “USA” nuclear bomb, crown of thorns and all, while the calm American-born pope sends doves that literally dirty his suit. The point was simple: angry bluster may grab headlines, but the pope’s call for peace and justice lands with people in a way that bellicose posturing does not.

I spent the day covering Doug Ford’s education bill that centralizes power away from local trustees and looks aimed more at cutting costs and asserting control than at helping vulnerable students. In the cartoon I put Ford and Education Minister Paul Calandra in detention, mouthing off about their “non-negotiable” plan while a teacher threatens more punishment, and the retro classroom details underscore how out of touch the top-down approach appears. This is another episode (here’s Calandra and Ford at Sam the Record Man) from my long running series “Young Doug Ford”, which I’ve drawn throughout his Premiership. As it goes, whenever I deliver an edition of YDF it gets rave reviews from a sliver of my following, presumedly from my cohort of GenX’ers who grew up in southern Ontario. While it’s popular with a niche following it seems to be a head scratcher for everyone else based on the relatively small number of hearts and likes.

Wednesday May 7, 2025 - From the archives

Paranoid that I might lose some of you who couldn’t care less about Ontario or Canadian news I’m peppering this newsletter with content that might keep you from falling to sleep, or worse, unsubscribing (I’m so close to the 1000 mark.) So I present this adapted cartoon from last year that has broader appeal than the wording that was more directed to Canadian audiences. I drew Trump as a pull-string doll to mock his predictable foreign policy. By calling it the "Excursion Edition" and adding the Iranian flag, I'm satirizing his repetitive talking points about the Iran deal and the Strait of Hormuz. The list of phrases shows how his public statements often feel like a pre-programmed script. It captures his habit of using the same boastful catchphrases instead of actual diplomacy. I return to this (see below) with my parody of the “Boy Who Cried Wolf.”

By the midweek, I was sticking with domestic news, as I witnessed the seesaw of Canadian politics tilt and knew Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is at a crossroads: he needs to mend fences in his party, broaden his appeal and make careful strategic moves if he wants to climb out of this slump. It feels like a narrow path, but not an impossible one, and how he responds now could define the next few years. At the same time Mark Carney has to turn momentum into substance and show he can deliver on promises now that a Parliamentary majority has been secured. In the cartoon I split the page into a then and now: Poilievre once lifted by Justin Trudeau, now buried while Carney sits high, which summed up how the balance of power has flipped and how quickly fortunes can change.

By Friday I was watching Trump’s bluster; his bluffs can win short-term concessions but erode trust with allies and force partners to recalibrate how much they can rely on U.S. commitments, from talk of NATO withdrawal to ceasefire threats with Iran. In the cartoon I turned him into a twisted children’s-book figure, holding a sheep in an Uncle Sam hat and surrounded by his catchphrases, to show how performative and repetitive the whole act has become. Sure the gag is a familiar one, but as I’ve come to know from likes and shares, it’s the obvious ones that grab the most attention get the most appreciation.

To end the week I turned my attention home: With hospitals short-staffed, school funding lagging and food banks stretched, many have rightly asked why the money wasn’t redirected to urgent needs. In the cartoon I called it “Air Folks One,” showing Ford aboard a Bombardier Challenger 650 with a sky-written “For the People” slogan, to needle the gap between his populist pitch and an obvious luxury purchase during an affordability crisis.

We head into the next seven days after a notable de-escalation of violence in the Persian Gulf and a tentative pause between Israel, Lebanon and Hezbollah. The Strait of Hormuz remains fragile and the U.S. blockade situation is far from settled, so whether the ceasefire with Iran holds is anyone’s guess. Domestically, I’ll be watching the start of the “Carney” era as a majority government moves to consolidate power and unveil a new legislative agenda, the federal fuel excise tax holiday that begins April 20 and the brewing Ontario controversies over an omnibus bill and Doug Ford’s $28.9 million jet. My sense remains that Trump is not out of the weeds in the Middle East despite his claims otherwise.

In these weekly summaries, I try to capture a five-day account of the most striking stories through my perspective as a middle-aged cartoonist living in south-central Canada. Often, huge issues play out in tandem, yet that reality may go missing in the final recording.

The past five days distilled a strange, jarring truth about our moment: humanity at its loftiest and most ruinous at once. Early in the week, we cheered as Artemis II’s Orion capsule pushed farther from Earth than any crewed craft in half a century, sending back truly awesome images from beyond the far side of the Moon and returning its astronauts safely toward Friday’s splashdown. This was a reminder that collective endeavour, science, and restraint can extend what civilization can imagine and achieve. That achievement felt, for a few luminous days, like proof that our species still aspires to the noble and enduring.

Running parallel was a darker, unmistakable counterpoint: a president’s social-media threats to “destroy a civilization,” a hasty claim of a ceasefire and a manufactured “massive victory,” with ensuing confusion and carnage as allies and adversaries denied any real accord. Where Artemis offered stewardship of a common future, the week’s politics displayed the opposite: impulsive brinksmanship, vainglorious spin, and the abdication of responsibility that turns wars into moral and strategic losses. One headline will be read as a chapter in human progress; the other will be engraved in the history of a presidency that traded prudence for spectacle. These matters formed the bulk of cartoon attention, though other subjects brought some respite.

As Artemis II Orion capsule travelled behind the Moon, its crew faced a 40-minute communication blackout, a planned and significant part of their mission. This period offered a unique opportunity for the astronauts to experience the sunlit far side of the Moon, a view no human had seen before. While operationally routine, this moment provided a profound escape from Earth’s chaos, allowing the crew to connect with the cosmos in a deeply personal way. In this cartoon, I’ve shown the Artemis II crew passing the far side of the Moon, flipping NASA’s idea of “lunar silence” by depicting a group of noisy, partying aliens who see the passing space capsule as the real intruder. Those who use public transit by train may be familiar with the so-called quiet zones, which seem nice in theory but hardly live up to expectations.

Having heard numerous accounts from those who vividly remember that moment, I find that this cartoon perfectly captures the scene: a nighttime setting with people glued to their TV sets, eagerly watching history unfold.

Donald Trump’s rhetoric of “wiping out a civilization” evoked the tactics of ancient conquerors like Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan, creating a perilous situation with Iran. His approach undermined America’s moral standing and strained alliances, while the world watched for resolution or disaster. This strategy, driven by hubris, risked destabilizing global peace and highlighted the dangers of allowing ego to dictate international relations. Someone complained on my social media that cartoons like this might only serve to taunt Trump into carrying out his threats. Yes, we’ve reached that point where people feel the need to restrain strangers lest it upset an unrestrained President of the United States.

While a ceasefire, at least recognized by the U.S., has brought temporary relief, the damage to global economies and alliances is clear. The Trump administration’s attempt to spin this as a victory overlooks the reality that Iran remains intact, controlling the Strait of Hormuz. In this cartoon, I’m joking about the president’s ever-changing claims of being a hero for stopping six, seven, or eight wars. It’s ironic that his own rash decisions started the current issues with Iran. Trump and his supporters often repeat the mantra, “We cannot let them have a nuclear weapon,” as if only the “crazy Iranians” would actually use one. This overlooks the fact that several unstable regimes already possess nuclear arms, and it’s important to remember that only one country dared to use them… which is lost on Donald Trump.

Closer to home, MP Marilyn Gladu’s defection to the Liberal Party has stirred familiar partisan debates over floor-crossing in Canadian politics. While often seen as opportunistic, this practice is a legitimate aspect of parliamentary democracy. The most immediate consequence is the weakening of Pierre Poilievre’s leadership, signalling potential instability and strategic losses for his party. Although Gladu’s past knuckle dragging socially conservative views pose challenges for the Liberals, these can be managed over time. The real standout is the immediate shift in power dynamics, raising the inevitability that Carney will have his majority after next week’s by-elections, and Poilievre is further humiliated as depicted in the cartoon.

Meanwhile, President Trump’s handling of the Iran situation revealed the risks of impulsive political manoeuvres. The contrast between the awe of space exploration and the tension of geopolitical brinkmanship offered a snapshot of our dual nature: our capacity for groundbreaking achievements and our tendency towards conflict. Canada, proud of its astronaut’s role in Artemis II, has been watching closely, emphasizing the need for careful, steady leadership. In this cartoon, I’m showing the huge gap between the inspiring teamwork of the Artemis II moon mission and a chaotic victory parade for Donald Trump that celebrates “winning” while the rest of the world falls apart behind him.

Not to beat a dead horse, but if a delusional person makes a fake threat against a president, the police will rush in to arrest them. But when a reckless president threatens to wipe out a civilization, it’s just another Tuesday in America’s so-called golden era. I know that focusing on Trump might turn off readers looking for a break from his controversies, especially those in my region of the country. Meanwhile, folks from farther away may not connect nor care about the provincial or national stories I’m tackling. My audience is a mix, and since I make most of my living from the local newspaper, I have to carefully keep what I serve up in mind. Next week promises to be transformative for Canada, as Mark Carney stands on the brink of winning a razor-thin majority in Parliament. It will be interesting to see whether he can turn the ambitious rhetoric we heard in Davos into concrete actions in response to Canada’s latest hegemony frenemy. How will the provinces react, and what effect will this have on separatist movements in Quebec and Alberta? What does it mean for the Conservative Party and Pierre Poilievre’s leadership? Meanwhile, maintaining the ceasefire is crucial as Netanyahu escalates tensions in Lebanon. Melania seems to be anxious in getting out in front of potential fallout from the Epstein files, while Trump will likely try to divert attention, possibly turning his focus to Cuba. The news churns, the satire awaits.

In a podcast this week, I heard “Fire and Fury” author Michael Wolff say that “covering Trump is a civic duty.” This week, Trump appeared in the Supreme Court’s visitors’ gallery for a case on birthright citizenship. Attorney General Pam Bondi was dismissed, and a federal judge ordered a halt on his White House ballroom unless Congress approves the $400 million project. He also went on prime-time TV, rehashing his Iran war rhetoric from social media, downplaying the war’s potential length, boasting about Iran, chastising allies, and dismissing the Strait of Hormuz blockade as not his problem.

While I agree with Wolff that covering Presidents is essential for journalists, including editorial cartoonists, it’s also crucial not to be mesmerized by the disruptor and ignore other issues. Should we, north of the border, turn our attention to Avi Lewis’s rise, the end of door-to-door mail delivery, or draw on Bryon Noem, husband of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, wearing large fake breasts?

Ten years ago, my now-retired editorial pages editor, Howard Elliott, warned me of this peril, to go after “the low hanging fruit” cautiously. In nearly three decades at the Hamilton Spectator, I’ve probably drawn three times as many cartoons about Presidents 45 and 47 than all others combined, starting with 42, Bill Clinton. There’s been bushels of low hanging fruit that’s been plucked, that’s for certain!

If you’re expecting Trump satire in today’s newsletter, sorry to say, you’ll be disappointed. This week, I deliberately avoided him to concentrate on regional issues instead of the predictable spectacle of a twice-elected president causing chaos globally. There’s a lot to reflect on here that I’ve drawn of him in the past. I recognize that many who turn to platforms like this are driven by their dislike for Trump and come here to fuel vitriol against him. Ask yourself, is there anything left for the President to say or do that’s enlightening, surprising, or helpful? No, I say, for this week we resist him and declare: TRUMP IS BORING.

Avi Lewis takes charge of the NDP, depicted in my cartoon standing in a “political wilderness” of stumps with his Leap Manifesto. Claiming “The Left,” he alienates provincial figures like Alberta’s NDP heavyweight Naheed Nenshi, who shouts “Pinko Radical Loon!” The cartoon depicts the divide between Lewis’s environmental agenda and resource-reliant provinces. He faces pushback over green policies, language barriers in Quebec, and wary blue-collar supporters. Lewis aims to capture the left-of-centre space but must balance bold ideas with practical solutions to avoid losing moderate voters. There’s a decidedly extremist group on the far right trying to win support from Pierre Poilievre. On the left, Avi Lewis may also cater to an extremist flank, making it hard for the NDP to gain seats. This issue affects both the NDP and the Conservative Party, allowing Carney and the Liberals to take advantage of the centre ground.

As a kid, I collected stamps, and those albums still collect dust in a closet. When I drew my latest cartoon, I realized I had no idea about current postage costs. Checking out the Canada Post site, I found they still offer souvenir editions, (here’s Blue Rodeo) even as few people send letters now. The cartoon highlights the end of door-to-door mail service with a fictional “Home Delivery Commemorative Souvenir Stamp” set, turning mailboxes into museum pieces like “The Post Vault.” This change to community mailboxes stirs debate, aiming to cut costs and boost efficiency, but it raises concerns for postal workers and rural communities.

Okay, this borders on Trump content without including an actual depiction of Trump. Doug Ford’s Texas trip paints him as a strongman opposite Trump, but it felt more like political theatre. He admires Governor Greg Abbott for shared conservative views (anti-woke rhetoric, climate denialism, Mexico denialism…) yet Abbott didn’t find even a couple of minutes for him. My cartoon shows Ford as a bull among Texas bulls in MAGA hats, hinting that his style might not resonate in a protectionist state. While he claimed success with a $462 million investment from Waste Management, critics saw it as political optics. With Ontario’s legislature just reopening, some viewed the trip as a dodge from local issues, questioning its real value to taxpayers.

The Artemis II mission is a major win for human exploration. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, enjoying snacks like ketchup chips, is making history as the first non-American to travel so far from Earth. He’s on his way to the Moon, with a flyby planned for April 6th. This journey highlights teamwork across countries, and while some worry about costs and purposes, they overlook the incredible human experiences and knowledge gained. Hansen’s role shows Canada’s important part in this exciting adventure.

REST IN PEACE Stephen Lewis (1937-1926)

Stephen Lewis was a great speaker with a rich and precise vocabulary.

This c1978 editorial cartoon by Vic Roschkov sticks in my mind and introduces this week’s look at past editorial cartoons created by other artists in the field.

Stephen Lewis served as a moral compass for Canada. He transformed oratory into a potent instrument for social justice. Whether leading the Ontario NDP to historic heights or fighting the global HIV/AIDS pandemic at the United Nations, he moved hearts and shifted policy through sheer conviction and eloquence. As a “champion of the dispossessed,” his legacy transcends partisan politics, leaving behind a blueprint for compassionate leadership and an unwavering belief that a more equitable world is always within reach. He was before my time as a staff editorial cartoonist, but like many others, I remember his radio political discussions on *Morningside* with iconic figures like Dalton Camp and Eric Kierans. They really stuck with me. Back when I was a nerdy teen in the 1980s, I also recall his commentaries on CITYpulse News, where he shared his sharp takes on various injustices. I remember watching along with my dad, a staunch Progressive Conservative voter, appreciating his oratory skills, even if he didn’t always agree with him.

Toronto in 1970 was a city gradually moving away from its “Tory” past, with new voices emerging even as unwritten rules continued to exclude Jewish people from certain neighbourhoods and elite social circles. I greatly admire Duncan MacPherson as one of Canada’s leading editorial cartoonists, but I can’t help but notice a lingering sense of suspicion and bias against those from outside “Toronto the Good.” This outdated attitude, filled with negative stereotypes, is evident in this example of his work.

Liberal leader Robert Nixon misses the mark, with then Premier John Robarts evoking a Minnesota Fats character. Published in the Toronto Star a few days after Stephen Lewis was elected leader of the NDP.

Meanwhile, my predecessor Blaine took a more celebratory approach in highlighting Stephen Lewis’s victory as Ontario’s NDP leader, a position he held until 1978. His leadership coincided with that of his father David Lewis, who served as the federal NDP leader from 1971 to 1975. Just a week ago, as depicted in the top cartoon I drew, Avi Lewis, Stephen’s son and David’s grandson, was elected as the federal NDP leader, marking a significant dynasty in NDP leadership.

Back to the present, reflecting on Michael Wolff’s idea of civic duty, next week I’m likely to be drawn to the ongoing mess caused by Trump’s reckless decision to attack Iran. This mistake becomes clearer each day, with serious consequences for his administration. Innocent lives have been lost, from children in Iran to civilians in Lebanon and the Persian Gulf. U.S. soldiers are caught in a pointless conflict, adding to the tragedy. The environmental damage and the closing of the Strait of Hormuz worsen the situation, while Trump’s hostility toward NATO threatens global stability. Trump’s imposition of U.S. trade tariffs on long-standing allies, functioning as economic bombs, is compounded by American military actions that have destabilized the global economy. There’s a bittersweet hope that the disgrace of this administration and growing suffering it’s causing for American voters will bring an end to this regime and the harm it’s causing worldwide. A lot more drama has yet to unfold before that can ever happen. In the meantime, Happy Easter to those who celebrate it.

It was a welcome break amidst the ongoing geopolitical turmoil sparked by the U.S. President’s missile and air attacks on Iran, which have escalated into a broader regional conflict in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. Let this edition of my weekly ramblings serve as a much-needed diversion from the drama. We all need an escape now and then to clear our minds, and stepping away from the home office is beneficial for our health!

My trip to Montreal was inspired by the opening reception of an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games. Hosted at the McCord Stewart Museum in downtown Montreal, right across from McGill University’s iconic entrance, the exhibition runs until September 13. My professional club, the Association of Canadian Cartoonists, partnered with the gallery in 2012 when it showcased the illustrious careers of Montreal’s editorial cartoonist giants, Terry Mosher (Aislin) from the Gazette and Serge Chapleau from La Presse. The curator, Christian Vachon, is deeply passionate about highlighting both past and present Canadian editorial cartoonists, and this current exhibit is no exception.

The show features a rich collection, including uniforms, posters, films, and, of course, editorial cartoons. It delves into various facets of the Games, emphasizing design and visual appeal while also exploring political ambitions, architectural innovations, and the city’s transformation. Visitors gain insights into the challenges and triumphs of preparing for the Games and their enduring impact on Montreal’s identity and reputation.

The ‘76 Olympics were iconic for athletes like Nadia Comăneci, who scored the first perfect 10 in gymnastics, and Vasily Alekseyev, who set a weightlifting world record. Alberto Juantorena achieved a rare double win in the 400m and 800m, while the U.S. Boxing Team, led by Sugar Ray Leonard, became legendary.

Canada, however, didn’t win a gold medal, a distinction repeated at Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympics. Yikes. This changed in 2010 when Canada set a record with 14 gold medals at the Vancouver/Whistler Olympics. Phew.

Still, the 1976 Montreal Olympics were a defining moment for Quebec and Canada, showcasing the nation on a global stage and celebrating French Canadian culture. Despite financial scandals and occurring during a period of intense federal-provincial bickering and rising separatism, the Games fostered national pride and unity. They spurred significant infrastructure development and promoted bilingualism, leaving a lasting cultural legacy that highlighted Canada’s diversity and resilience.

Last week, my colleague Scott Radley from the Spec shared a surprising piece about Hamilton’s bid to host the Olympics in 1968, competing against Montreal and Toronto. Many people don’t realize this part of our history, even though Hamilton has a legacy of hosting major events, starting with the British Empire Games in 1930.

While we also aimed to host the 2015 Pan Am Games, much of the attention went to Toronto. Interestingly, discussions about our Olympic bid were rarely mentioned. This piqued my curiosity about how the Spec’s cartoonist, Blaine, depicted the situation.

Jean Drapeau, the mayor of Montreal, went to great lengths to promote his city successfully with Expo 67 and used that momentum for the 1976 Olympics. Hamilton’s Mayor Vic Copps was equally proud, pushing hard for our Olympic bid, though Blaine humorously suggested that Copps’ ego was as big as the event itself.

Those who know me understand my soft spot for nostalgia. At just 8 years old in 1976, looking back on the jittery film clips paired with syncopated rhythms and groovy brass evokes a touch of sentimentalism, deeply etched in my mind.

The McCord Museum’s exhibit on the 1976 Olympics is a splendid look at a key moment in history for Quebec and Canada. It not only highlights the athletic achievements of the Games but also shows how they affected our culture and politics. By celebrating Montreal’s Olympic legacy, the exhibit encourages us to think about how these events shaped our national identity and brought us together during tough times. Trump is depicted stuck in a tree by his own “I ♥ TRUMP” underwear, calling for help from allies he’s estranged from due to tariffs and unilateral moves. In the U.S., the word ‘wedgie’ describes this act, more commonly carried out by schoolyard bullies. Where I grew up, and where I’m assuming some in the tree were raised, the operative term is “gotchie pull.” It’s a visual take on the pitfalls of creating international issues and then seeking assistance from those one has alienated.

Wednesday, March 18, 2026 — Too Many Pots on the Stove

This take, along with the previous cartoon, pulled in more than a million views on Instagram as the week progressed. They were both picked up and featured in this week’s Politico’s Cartoon Carousel. In this depiction, Trump contends with boiling crises in Iran, Ukraine, and Venezuela, while an overcooked bird smokes in an oven labelled “Diplomacy.” A withered cut of meat representing the fate awaiting Cuba sits on a butcher’s block. This scene illustrates the risks of managing multiple geopolitical tensions with impulsive strategies. In the polarized media landscape, there is no middle ground between those exuding confidence that the Iran terror regime is all but wiped out, and the rest looking askance at these baseless claims, along with declarations cooked up by a madman in the White House.

Thursday, March 19, 2026 — Iron Curtain, Ontario Edition

Here’s my only foray into Canadian politics this week. As an editorial cartoonist in Canada, I try to stay relevant amidst the geopolitical chaos while also serving local readers and maintaining some semblance of CanCon (Canadian Content). Feel free to skip ahead if Ontario politics isn’t your thing; although, if you’ve gotten this far into the summary, you might sense a similarity between my provincial Premier and the President of the United States. Doug Ford unveils an “Iron Curtain” over Ontario’s government, critiquing proposed changes to Freedom of Information laws that could hinder transparency and accountability. Look familiar?

Friday, March 20, 2026 — Leash Laws

Benjamin Netanyahu and Vladimir Putin are depicted leading Trump on leashes, underscoring the disparity between his rhetoric and policy outcomes. This highlights how powerful leaders can influence international relations, making someone with a legitimate claim appear subordinate, in the case of the above situation, a lapdog. Now, this cartoon raised a few eyebrows, and some expressed their displeasure with the inclusion of the Israeli Prime Minister. However, the goal was to critique political actions, not target any religious group, as was alleged, and is consistent whenever I draw Netanyahu that it will receive pushback especially from this media PR outlet. The intent is to engage in political critique, not to propagate harmful stereotypes or conspiracy theories. Satire aims to provoke thought and encourage dialogue about important issues. While it might not please everyone, it’s meant to spark conversation and reflection. It’s regrettable if the imagery was interpreted in a way that was not intended.

Saturday, March 21, 2026 — Commander Crude

Trump appears as a superhero in an oil barrel, focusing on immediate fossil fuel gains. His hands are trapped, and no one is helping him escape from a predicament of his own making. The week ended with news that oil sanctions have been lifted on Russia, and ironically, likely on Iran, because the war Trump initiated has disrupted the global oil supply and created an economic crisis. Energy Dominance is a key crusade of Donald Trump and his administration. It seems like a last-ditch effort to turn back the clock just as the perils of fossil fuel reliance stare the world in the face amid the current supply shortage crisis. Instead of diversifying energy sources and promoting EVs and renewable energy technology, the Trump administration is coddling the oil barons while ignoring the data that shows carbon energy and the emissions they create are fueling the climate crisis. This image questions the sustainability and long-term impact of such policies as the world moves toward renewable energy.

This week’s cartoons illustrate how Trump’s influence continues to shape global events and politics. From diplomatic blunders to transparency issues at home, these images highlight the widespread impact of his decisions. As we deal with these challenges, it’s evident that such leadership affects everyone, not just those who voted for him. I am a Canadian editorial cartoonist based in Canada. No, don’t go! Please stick with me, because the domestic topics I tackle on are relatable beyond the borders where I draw. From conversations with friends in the United States, I know North Americans share much in common when it comes to Trump fatigue and the societal issues getting short shrift because of the chaos. While the spectacle of the U.S. presidency and its reckless use of military power (and other distractions) grab headlines and rightly draws ire, there are urgent stories unfolding much closer to home. Like Americans, many Canadians see Donald Trump’s aggressive policies, from sweeping tariffs that risk our economy to ad-libbed military moves that roil global markets, as direct threats to everyday life. The spike in gasoline prices after foreign escalation is one clear example. Still, an entire ecosystem of issues that shape our daily lives gets less attention from commentators and, quite frankly, yours truly. One can see from my body of work from last week that I had a lot to get off my chest with regards to the latest insanity of the President who single handedly went along with Benjamin Netanyahu to unleash the latest crisis in the middle east and Persian Gulf region. This week I drew on Trump’s theatrics when it mattered, but I spent more time on topics with immediate consequences here: health care cuts, shifting alliances in Parliament, and the human cost of the addiction crisis played out in public spaces. These are the stories that land on doorsteps, in emergency rooms, and in library foyers. They deserve both scrutiny and urgency.

Tuesday, 10 March 2026: Band-Aids on a Broken Wing

Ontario’s health system is unravelling at the seams. Premier Doug Ford’s focus on spending and high-profile infrastructure projects has not addressed core problems: an aging population, chronic workforce burnout, and persistent underfunding. Hospitals taking on bank loans are a sign of systemic failure, not a temporary hiccup. The quiet expansion of private care, paired with opaque provincial planning, risks widening inequality in access. Admittedly, my cartoon that day leaned on a familiar gag, a patient at death’s door and a collapsing foundation, but the image keeps returning year after year, decade after decade, because the underlying crisis does too. If you’re glued to the compelling series The Pitt, as much as I am, the challenge of delivering ER care feels equally relatable on both sides of the border.

Wednesday, 11 March 2026: MAGA Hats and Oil Spikes

The conflict with Iran showed how quickly a presidency driven by impulse can sway global markets. Trump’s public declarations of military success ran counter to jittery oil traders and rising prices that ripple into Canadian households. Surrounded by advisers who amplify rather than question him, the White House turned a regional flare-up into a broader economic headache. The dunce hats Trump wears seem to be appearing with greater frequency. He even wore one during a dignified transfer for fallen service members over the weekend, a tone-deaf move from someone who should know better. Undignified indeed.

Thursday, 12 March 2026: Adrift at Sea

Lori Idlout’s switch from the NDP to the Liberals is a symptom of a party facing serious challenges. The NDP’s internal energy has not translated into national momentum, and defections feed a narrative of decline just as the Liberals consolidate power. This is less about one person and more about a centre-left movement that needs clearer purpose and strategy. My drawing focused on the political cost of drift and the need for a compelling plan. It used the familiar rescue gag that cartoonists reach for often. We sometimes shape events to fit a joke, but in Idlout’s case she likely saw a real need for rescue, sensing that even the promise of a leadership vote would not erase the narrow win she eked out in the last election.

Friday, 13 March 2026: Trying to Out-Crazy Crazy

The U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and the resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices higher and sharpened the real-world consequences of impulsive foreign policy. What begins as a tactical move can quickly become economic pain for consumers and businesses worldwide. The episode underlined how military adventurism overseas transmits directly into Canadian wallets. No U.S. administration had been willing to take on Iran’s theocratic regime since it came to power nearly 50 years ago. That changed when Trump acted without a clear plan, convinced he could take on Iran. Anyway, you know the story.

Saturday, 14 March 2026: Stacks on the Front Line

With provincial cuts shrinking harm reduction capacity, public libraries in Hamilton have become de facto crisis centres. Vulnerable people displaced from services are showing up in library foyers and staff are left to manage safety and care without adequate resources. This is a local fallout of provincial policy choices and a failure to fund mental health, addiction supports, and housing. My local library has attracted much attention in recent weeks as it copes with a crisis that has forced it to close on Sundays and implement a presenting-a-card rule. It is a beautiful library and the official archive of my work as an editorial cartoonist for the Hamilton Spectator. This is not just a local story; province-wide budgetary pressures mixed with ideology are chopping valuable services. The addiction problem cannot be passed off to other jurisdictions or treated with punishment. If such attitudes prevail there will be consequences.

Big, headline-grabbing power plays abroad and routine policy failures at home interact to shape daily life in Canada. International brinkmanship raises costs and anxiety, while provincial neglect leaves communities without the services they need. Canadians feel both effects at once, at the pump, in hospital corridors, and inside public spaces meant for learning and refuge. The political task is clear: move beyond spectacle and short-term fixes, and commit to sustaining public goods that actually improve people’s lives.

Wednesday, March 11, 1936: The Death Watch by Ivan Glassco

Let’s wrap the review with an editorial cartoon that appeared 90 years ago in my newspaper, The Hamilton Spectator, leading up to World War II. Ivan Glassco’s 1936 editorial cartoon, “The Death Watch,” critiques the fragile state of disarmament amid rising global tensions. Disarmament is depicted as a vulnerable figure in bed, overshadowed by a menacing armored figure symbolizing the threat of militarism. This reflects the challenges faced by international peace efforts during the 1930s, especially as countries like Germany began rearming against the Treaty of Versailles. The cartoon highlights public anxiety about the potential failure of disarmament, showing the precarious balance between peace and the threat of another global conflict.

The current geopolitical situation, with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and increased NATO defence spending, both echoes and differs from the 1936 context. Both periods face threats to peace, with Germany then and Russia now, prompting military readiness. The notion of any disarmament deal or treaty seems like a quaint pursuit from a bygone era. Today, NATO technically offers structured collective defence, unlike past fragmented efforts in the thirties. There’s also a shift as member states seek independence from the USA, moving away from reliance on Pax Americana. This leads to a more self-reliant defence posture, with broader acceptance of military spending for deterrence, contrasting with the 1936 focus on disarmament to maintain peace.

Over the past seven days I focused on recent U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran because of their historical and global significance. At the outset, let me state I approve the swift elimination of this so-called Supreme Leader and many of his henchmen; it offers hope that a long-enduring regime of death, dreadful oppression and state sponsorship of terrorism may be nearing its end. But the unclear motives of the unilaterally acting aggressor raise justifiable concerns. This latest move by a very unconventional, some would say lunatic, U.S. administration has shaken domestic and international stability, largely because it appears to be driven by a President operating without proper checks and balances.

People hold many views. Some see it as a distraction from controversies such as the Epstein case, others view it as a desperate effort to divert attention from low approval ratings and failures on domestic issues, from public outrage over ICE policies to erratic tariffs. Some believe it stems from Project 2025, a Christian nationalist agenda promoted by the Trump-led GOP, which favours closer ties with allies like Israel while keeping pressure on Iran. Others argue Netanyahu is manipulating Trump like a marionette, using U.S. force to pursue Israeli goals that offer little benefit to most Americans. A few even suggest the attack could enrich the Trump family, since instability often raises living costs for ordinary people while enriching the wealthy.

While these theories contain elements of truth, the central, undeniable point is that this military aggression undermines the multilateralism and democratic principles the U.S. claims to uphold. There are arguments that global pillars of multilateralism are showing serious signs of decay; just over a week ago the war-waging President of today was convening his so-called “Board of Peace” among a collection of pay-to-play members that includes dictators and vulture colonists. Added to that, the President campaigned on election pledges that the U.S. would actively remove itself from foreign forays and endless wars. Yet what we are witnessing is a powerful nation behaving like a playground alpha male toward weaker countries, preferring military force to diplomacy and fairness. Short-term victories for the hegemon may be achievable, but the long-term dire consequences for the victor could be far greater.

Imagine directing that power against oppressive, murderous regimes like Russia's, rather than using it to placate them. Thinking of pressing domestic issues, rising gasoline prices and the inevitable increases in other costs that follow reckless presidential decisions made on impulse, I feel the weight of these choices. They merit an entire week of editorial cartoons devoted to the single subject of the Trump-led attack on Iran. Let’s dive in…

The recent U.S.-Israeli strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader reveals significant legal and ethical flaws, despite being framed as decisive leadership. My cartoon depicts Trump as the “President of Peace” versus the “President of Chaos,” suggesting the strikes lacked congressional approval and international support. Instead, they seemed to serve political distraction and economic interests, worsening regional instability. I watched Trump’s first public comments days later in the East Room during a medal reception. Rather than addressing the attack’s serious implications, he excitedly discussed the gold drapes behind him, which covered an archway to a construction zone for a ballroom he designed. This moment illustrated the disconnection between his administration’s rhetoric and the reality of its actions.

The “Rolling in Dough” image critiques a cookie-cutter foreign policy that treats Iran and Venezuela like pastry to be cut for oil profits. It highlights a one-size-fits-all approach driven by fossil fuel interests, overlooking local complexities, environmental costs and the dangers of repeating past mistakes. It is well known that U.S. actions, often justified by military might, frequently stem from resource exploitation. While previous shows of might masked these motivations behind a façade of nation-building, there is now a blatant quest for oil, with any discussion of nation-building ridiculed as “woke,” especially by figures like Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.

Moving closer to home, I focused on Canada’s response to the U.S.-Israel strike on Iran. Historically, Uncle Sam would give us a heads-up before dropping bombs, but not this time. Prime Minister Mark Carney supported the strike to prevent nuclear threats but had doubts about bypassing the UN and allies, highlighting a shaky global system. It was a rare misstep for someone who usually avoids blunders, perhaps due to being caught between state visits in India and Australia. Despite this, he did not receive the “Starmer treatment” from Trump, who criticized the UK prime minister for not being a dependable leader like Winston Churchill.

The “You Break It, You Own It” shoppe lampoons the tendency to evade post-conflict responsibilities, warning that leaving reconstruction to local actors undermines the rules-based order, invites imitation by rivals and erodes global stability while normalizing unilateral interventions. Amid this backdrop, Putin finds reasons to be cheerful; despite losing another Mideast proxy, Russia is profiting from soaring oil prices, successfully diverting attention from the terror inflicted on Ukraine. Including Pete Hegseth in editorial cartoons adds an intriguing twist, as Donald Trump once described him as being straight out of “central casting” due to his telegenic appearance and combat veteran background, suggesting that he is more of an entertainer than an intellectual force in contemporary media.

To wrap up the week, I imagined Trump as a grotesque oil baron between Venezuela and Iran, acting like a turbaned Supreme Leader of resource imperialism. Just a week into the attack on Iran, he was already boasting about having a say in choosing the next Supreme Leader, echoing the “Mission Accomplished” attitude. He treats nations like fuel pumps to exploit, prioritizing personal and corporate gain over democratic values and climate commitments. Presenting himself as the supreme leader over puppet viceroys highlights a reality that feels both alarming and oddly comical, as if it is all just a temporary act.

My first experience as an editorial cartoonist came when I was around ten or eleven. I remember the schoolyard buzz about the hatred toward the West, fuelled by grainy news images of thousands of “Death to America” protesters led by a white-bearded man in a large black turban, Ayatollah Khomeini. He terrified me, and humour became a coping mechanism, much like drawing Trump does for me today. Both subjects highlight how a unilateral U.S.-Israeli strike to remove Iran’s Supreme Leader exposes significant legal and ethical failures disguised as decisive leadership. This cookie-cutter, resource-driven foreign policy shirks post-conflict responsibilities, eroding multilateral norms and risking long-term instability. Canada finds itself torn between loyalty to alliances and principled conduct, while a transactional approach to Iran and Venezuela treats nations like fuel pumps to exploit, enriching a few while jeopardizing democratic and climate goals. The duration of this instability is uncertain; for Trump, a quick resolution might seem best, especially with Iran reportedly launching missiles and drones into neighbouring countries and blocking the Strait of Hormuz. These actions could lead to soaring gas prices and increased living costs worldwide. Way to go, Donald Trump. What follows from this reckless decision remains anyone’s guess.

As this newsletter goes out, the world is waking up to joint U.S. and Israeli military attacks against Iran. The stated goal is to eliminate immediate threats from Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. Additionally, statements from the President of the U.S. suggest an underlying interest in regime change. By moving forward without the approval of the U.S. Congress or the United Nations, this unilateral action ignores important legal protections and risks starting a major regional conflict that could threaten global stability and kill a lot of innocent lives. A pandoras box has been opened.

The Graeme Gallery reflects on the recent past so one can assume there’ll be a lot more to speak/draw to as this next chapter unfolds. The past week kicked off with a bang as the U.S. Supreme Court slapped down President Trump’s tariffs, declaring them unconstitutional. In a 6–3 ruling, the justices made it clear that his emergency powers don’t cover such peacetime antics, thanks to the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Trump wasn’t happy, especially with three conservative justices in the mix, whom he called traitors and turncoats.

And if that wasn’t enough, Trump is still clinging to the dream that tariff money will one day replace income tax. In his recent State of the Union address, he doubled down on this notion, insisting that tariffs could be a major revenue source. This fits into his grand strategy of using tariffs to negotiate trade deals and flex economic muscle. Economists, however, are rolling their eyes, warning that his plan could lead to higher prices for consumers and more trade tensions.

The U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team’s visit to Washington, initially meant to be a celebration of unity, took a complicated turn. After their exciting win against Canada on Sunday (heartbreaking to us Canadians,) the atmosphere at the White House on Tuesday was both festive and politically charged. After the game in the locker room, everyone focused on FBI Director Kash Patel, of all people, among the winning players. He had President Trump on speakerphone, making a negative comment about the women’s team, who also won gold. This sparked laughter among the players. Some team members attended the State of the Union address, where Trump used their victory to promote his vision for American success. Amid the chants of “USA” and performative hooting, these young athletes were clearly used as pawns in a political amphitheatre, trading a proper celebration in an ice arena for a manufactured spectacle under a circus tent.

Other issues drawn on pertained to Canada, indirectly influenced by Trump, such as shrinking options for Canadians seeking sunny spots to escape the winter cold, thanks to geopolitics. Also, Carney’s trade mission to India, a direct result of needing diversified trade now that the USA wants more from what they import. Finally, a wannabe Canadian Prime Minister who signalled a pivot away from the MAGA leader. Without further ado, here is the week that was in editorial cartoons.

Pierre Poilievre’s critique of Trump signals a noteworthy shift, though it risks alienating some “Maple MAGA” supporters. The cartoon captures his balancing act, urging a more responsible political discourse while questioning the sincerity of his pivot. That’s Jamil Jivani wedged between Poilievre and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. He’s the one to watch as Poilievre’s poll numbers slide; by leaning into his "Maple MAGA" persona and highlighting his college ties to J.D. Vance, he is clearly positioning himself to one day seize the Conservative leadership.

Boring Canadian politics has always needed a shot of humour to keep things lively, and like every country, we’ve invented nicknames for party splinters. We have the Tories, the grits, the dippers, and the Bloc. The Tories, reshaped by Prairie populists and Red Tory pragmatists, now include alt-right fringes and my favourite new coinage, Maple MAGA, which I’ve been slipping into cartoons all week. As a history nerd, I like to imagine Waffle movement NDPers from the late 1960s sparring with modern Maple MAGA, political opposites meeting in a perfect blend of waffles and maple. Har dee har. (Yes, I am that dad joke.)

Editorial cartoonists pluck the juiciest fruit from political discourse and fortify it with satire. I hope “Maple MAGA” becomes a historical label, a warning of how a fringe tried to steer Canada off course. Tropes often begin with a politician’s quip, like Marco Rubio’s mockery of Trump’s small hands, which gave cartoonists endless material. “Maple MAGA” has its own roots in Chrystia Freeland’s lampooning of Trump-admiring elements in Canada’s right, spreading it further on social media.

“Maple MAGA” blends Canadian maple symbolism with the U.S. MAGA brand, applied to Canadian politicians and movements echoing Trump-style populism. It’s associated with episodes like the Freedom Convoy and some UCP factions in Alberta, signalled by MAGA-style apparel and rhetoric filled with xenophobia, bigotry, misogyny, and science-denial.

Now my hommage to the mostly forgotten Hamilton Spectator editorial cartoonist from the thirties, Ivan Glassco. Related to the topic, here in this editorial cartoon he uses a depiction of a maple leaf to highlight threats to national unity from ideologies like “Communism,” “Nazism,” and, huh? “Provincialism.” The central black spot signifies growing concerns about these challenges, paralleling today’s political climate marked by the rise of “Maple MAGA.” Provincialism, one might be wondering, is the focus on regional interests over national unity, often leading to divisions among provinces. This is especially relevant today as Canada faces familiar issues like interprovincial trade barriers, which limit the flow of goods and services between regions. As Canada fortifies itself against U.S. tariffs, these barriers can hinder economic growth and create conflicts, emphasizing the need to balance regional concerns with national unity. Understanding provincialism is crucial for fostering cooperation among provinces in this challenging landscape.

While I’d love to wish away the “Maple MAGA” movement, it’s unlikely to disappear soon, despite Poilievre’s sudden critique of Trump. Far-right ideology in the U.S. and Canada isn’t going anywhere. The Maple leaf forever is always under some sort of threat. What’s certain is that threats against Canada will feature in my cartoons, like it or not, and we know with certainty whose foreign mouth it’ll be coming from. In the days to come, however, the bully pulpit seems set to be focused on Iran giving some respite in exchange for misery imposed on the middle east.

I set out this week determined to remove myself amid the constant zone flooding from you-know-who in this so-called golden era of history. The Winter Olympics may have diverted attention for the past two weeks. Every few years at the Hamilton Spectator, the Games give me a range of topics such as boycotts, doping, inequality of government funding of amateur sports, drone scandals, and this week, some curling shenanigans. My curling cartoon was the furthest thing I drew, distance-wise, from the chief distractor (or “DIC” as described in past posts.) No reporter asked him about “double-touching,” and he didn’t try to insert himself into the curling controversy in some late-night Truth Social rant… like his bizarre warning that China intends to eliminate the Stanley Cup. While many opportunities avail themselves to mix Olympic sports with politics, I regret making just one reference to them in editorial cartoons during the entire Milan-Cortina Games. Ah well, will have to wait for the next one.

Subjects I touched on ties to actions coming out of the White House: the growing likelihood that the tyranny oppressing the Cuban people will face increased pressure from the American hegemon. It’s also striking that while figures like U.K. power players such as Prince Andrew, Keir Starmer, Lord Peter Mandelson, and the whole British monarchy face heat and consequences connected to Jeffrey Epstein, their American counterparts, think a sitting President, an ex-President, captains of industry, the hoi polloi of the U.S. establishment, all largely remain untouched, a disparity that raises questions about the pursuit of justice.

Finally, responding to far-right rhetoric that blames immigration for Western ills, Canada’s closest analogue to Nigel Farage, or the unnamed MAGA monster to Canada’s south, Premier Danielle Smith announced a populist set of referendum questions this week that panders to her base and advances Alberta separation. With those subjects occupying my attention and pulling me away from the president’s distractions, I didn’t draw him once, no, not even once in the past seven days. Take that TDS accusers! Here’s a closer look at what I drew this week.

The curling scandal at the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics has put Canada in an awkward spot. Accusations of rule-bending against stars like Marc Kennedy and Rachel Homan have everyone talking. It’s a reminder that even in a sport known for its etiquette, Canada’s image of fair play is being challenged.

It’s a chance to show that our connection goes beyond mojitos on the beach.

Friday February 20, 2026:

The arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on misconduct charges is a royal bombshell. Thanks to the Epstein files and Virginia Giuffre’s bravery, the monarchy faces a crisis of trust. Interestingly, a sage comment left on one on my social media channels compared this case to Al Capone, who was famously brought down on technicalities rather than his more heinous crimes. It’s a mix of drama and justice, as the royal family navigates this scandal with the world watching. Expect much more to unfold.

Saturday February 21, 2026:

Premier Danielle Smith's proposed referendum on immigration and autonomy is a polarizing move that appeals to her core supporters. However, it risks sidestepping Alberta's structural economic challenges, as the government continues to rely on fluctuating oil and gas revenues to fund public services. This risky move could fuel separatist sentiment, but Albertans deserve leadership focused on real solutions, not distractions. ‘Maple MAGA’ refers to Canadian conservatives who align with the south of the border brand of politics—an ideology spearheaded most notably by Alberta’s Danielle Smith.

Saturday February 22, 1936: By Ivan Glassco,

Ninety years ago my late great predecessor at the Hamilton Spectator, Ivan Glassco, depicted a sick Earth as a patient, symbolizing the global turmoil of his time. With “Science” and “Diplomacy” as attending figures, he critiqued both scientific progress and diplomatic efforts. The technological advances of the 1930s brought both hope and concern, leading to environmental harm and the threat of war. “Diplomacy,” alongside the League of Nations, appeared ineffective in maintaining peace.

Today, Glassco’s illustration still hits home as we face challenges like climate change and global tensions. Science and diplomacy are crucial, yet often seem stuck, especially with veto powers for rogue states on the Security Council and the farcical Trump-led “Board of Peace.” His work reminds us of the ongoing struggle to balance progress with responsibility.

In a week filled with varied stories, I aimed to capture the complexities of our times, from sportsmanship to international relations, royal accountability to provincial politics. Next week, try as I may, it will be impossible not to draw my attention away from the great distractor. This week ends with talk of the Epstein files at high volume, especially in the UK. Just as this is happening, T-dude plans on flooding the zone with declassified disclosures of extraterrestrial life. Meanwhile, his administration scrambles to respond to the Supreme Court ruling against his tariff scheme, based on trumped-up threats (pardon the pun) against U.S. national security, like his ridiculous claim about fentanyl flooding in from Canada.

Awkwardly looking towards him will be Supreme Court Justices, some of whom he appointed and called “traitors” for not doing his bidding in a 6-3 ruling against him. Next Tuesday, he will deliver his State of the Union speech, predictably bloviating about it being in its greatest state ever, despite the disgrace he’s made of his country. Here in Canada, we watch, trying to mind our own business but incapable of doing so with the great distractor in the White House.

One of the tasks expected of editorial cartoonists is to be reactive to the news as it hits. Another key responsibility is to pull back, cut through the noise, and look at the bigger picture. Affairs within the country seem perpetually influenced by external factors from the neighbour to the south. What did we witness this past week? More sabre-rattling by Trump against Canada as he ranted without restraint, sounding like a petulant ill-informed man-child. We watched his Attorney General’s office, personified by Bondi in an appalling display, unbecoming of the historic and important role it serves, show blatant disregard for Congressional oversight over the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. If any confirmation was needed that Trump has turned the Department of Justice into his personal law firm, it came this week when Pam Bondi, during testimony, answered questions about Epstein’s victims by reciting Trump‑fed grievances and talking points about the Dow Jones Industrial Average surpassing 50,000. When a horrific shooting left many dead in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., the nation and world offered solace, from the King and other leaders, yet there was not a peep from the U.S. President. For many older folk, including myself, little attention had been paid to Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny until he dropped the word “Canada” among other hemispheric countries in his Super Bowl act; that moment underscored how truly great America is beyond the walls of an increasingly isolationist and unfriendly United States. Pulling back, I chose to end on an issue getting scant notice amid the noise: the crime being committed by a science-denying administration as it guts progress on environmental stewardship, trading a cleaner planet for the financial benefit of a handful of filthy rich oil tycoons and presidential cronies. It lacks the sensationalism of a screaming Attorney General, or another unhinged late-night social media post, but the consequences of this move is likely to cause incalculable damage like no other unleashed by this reckless administration. The bar keeps falling, corruption deepens daily, and it's hard to fathom how well‑intentioned people can still defend this. Without further ado, here’s the week that was in editorial cartoons.

Tuesday 10 February 2026 — Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl

Bad Bunny’s Spanish‑language, culturally rooted halftime set was a rebuke to a narrow, US‑centric idea of America. By name‑checking Canada and foregrounding Latino identity, the performance reminded viewers that “America” is a hemisphere of shared cultures and connections that outlast any single administration’s policies. The cartoon framed his act as a moment of continental solidarity and a challenge to Trump’s immigration posture.

Wednesday 11 February 2026 — Gordie Howe Bridge spat

The Gordie Howe International Bridge became a staging ground for presidential bluster as Trump demanded ownership and compensation. It’s clear that this rant is rooted in the grievances of one family, the Morouns, who own the old Ambassador Bridge. Their concerns are tied to the potential loss of traffic and revenue, especially given their strong political ties to Trump. A situation one Detroit newspaper aptly proclaimed as “pure oligarchy.” The cartoon contrasted Trump’s unilateral rhetoric (trolling, in case it isn’t clear enough) with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s calm diplomacy, suggesting that steady statecraft can contain erratic leadership and preserve long‑standing cross‑border cooperation.

Thursday 12 February 2026 — Tumbler Ridge valentine

The cartoon set aside satire to offer compassion. In response to the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, I chose to focus on collective care, the quick RCMP response, and the international outpouring of support, arguing that human kindness matters more than partisan point‑scoring in moments of loss. Editorial cartoonists are human and are expected to respond when overwhelming sadness overtakes never-ending catharsis. To some our takes provoke emotion, and to others, including myself, wincing. Dealing with my father’s recent death has intertwined with the events in Tumbler Ridge, bringing a deep sadness that I need to confront. Grief is complex, and both personal experiences and those observed from afar weigh heavily on us all.

Friday 13 February 2026 — EPA rollback and climate crime

Amid global distractions, the administration’s move to undo the EPA endangerment finding was drawn as a direct attack on science and the planet. The cartoon linked the rollback to special‑interest gain and warned of cross‑border consequences for Canada. There is a strong regressive pushback against the decades-long consensus aimed at seriously addressing and reversing the human impact driving the climate crisis. This ongoing back-and-forth undermines efforts to tackle the urgent challenges we face. Now, more than ever, we’re seeing a backward slide fuelled by conservative ideology that puts profit before stewardship, helping a handful while hurting the rest of us. It’s essential that we push back against this nonsense with legal action and strong advocacy so Canada and others don’t get left behind in the clean technology race.

Wednesday February 19, 1936 — The Cross-Road Puzzle

I took Friday off to deal with personal matters, so the opportunity availed itself to look through my predecessor at the Spectator’s body of work from around 90 years ago. Considering the world was on the cusp of world war the circumstances weren’t unlike the situation we witness in the present. Ivan Glassco registered frustration with the U.S. depicting a hybrid Uncle Sam, with I’m guessing, a Franklin D. Roosevelt character, symbolizing statesmanship at the crossroads, confronted by various directions to peace yet mired in indecision, holding flimsy notions of plans and schemes. The United States eventually moved away from its isolationist tendencies, recognizing the need to support its allies in the fight against tyranny. However, it took years of hesitation and dithering before the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 finally compelled the nation to take action. While the American public’s “supportive but non-combatant” stance echoes the caution of the 1930s, leadership styles couldn’t be more different: Franklin D. Roosevelt quietly readied a hesitant nation for war, while Donald Trump has opted for a “get out” strategy that critics see as little more than appeasing Vladimir Putin. And let’s not forget Trump’s self-promoting “Board of Peace,” which seems less about actual diplomacy and more about giving him a shiny trophy for avoiding responsibility on the global stage.

So another week in Trump’s “Golden Age of America” wraps up, and what a show it’s been. With Trump throwing tantrums about Canada and his Attorney General putting on an embarrassing display, it’s yet another week’s-worth of trash to add to the dumpster fire. Meanwhile, the tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge drew heartfelt messages from around the world, but the U.S. President was notably silent, but not surprising. Even Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny reminded us that America isn’t just the U.S.; it’s a broader tapestry of cultures, which is a nice reality check amid the noise. And let’s not overlook the administration’s sneaky moves to roll back environmental protections for a handful of wealthy benefactors. While the headlines grab attention, the real damage is happening under the radar, leaving us to wonder, yet again, how long this absurdity can continue. Here’s to another week of watching the chaos unfold from the north.

This past week, my dear old dad, Danford Royce MacKay, died. He was in his 93rd year.

Let’s not beat around the bush and call it “passed away,” though that’s the polite way our society likes to put it. Death is a subject we often avoid, yet it completes the circle of life. Each of us must face our mortality, and as we go through life, we confront the periodic deaths of loved ones. For many, especially those without chronic illnesses, its timing remains a mystery; we assume or hope for long lives, often asking without regard to planning for it, “Why do today what can be put off until tomorrow?”

In his late 80s, my dad’s diagnosis of dementia was, in some ways, a blessing. It provided a rough estimate of the end as his mind gradually slipped away. Make the best of what ever time was left and fill it with love and affection. Fortunately, he never reached a point of losing his ability to communicate until he was moved to palliative care just last weekend. He simply ran out of steam, ready for his eternal sleep, having signed a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order long ago with a clearer mind.

For my siblings and me, this wasn’t our first rodeo. We had experienced the deaths of grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents-in-law, and friends. Each death served as a valuable learning experience, a mix of good and bad lessons noted. “Put a gun to my head if I ever get to be like…” my father would often proclaim. Yet, as he entered long-term care 18 months ago, we realized that such declarations can remain unfulfilled in the face of reality.

It’s reassuring to live in a time when Canadians are confronting the reality of death through Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) laws, allowing individuals to ensure death with dignity. However, the system is far from perfect, and there is still much to discuss.

Palliative care is where my father’s final hours unfolded. While the last 12 hours were comfortable for him and peaceful for us, the hours leading up to them were chaotic and distressing. Mixed messages about medication dosages clouded the care process, creating a situation that can only be described as a “gong show.” My sister and I camped out by his bedside, witnessing his ghoulish wails and writhing in pain during the early hours. An experienced RN, my sister had seen many dignified deaths, but this was not one of them. She demanded an increase in medication to ease his pain and ensure a proper death.

Three of his children were honoured to accompany him on his final journey, yet it should not have required the intervention of a medical advocate to ensure a dignified death. My father may have lingered for needless hours, days, or even weeks. While death can be assessed on a case-by-case basis, palliative care needs to incorporate better medication options along with DNR orders.

Clear communication among medical staff is essential to eliminate confusion about medication and care plans. Increased training for caregivers in palliative settings can empower them to provide better support and recognize distress signals earlier. Advocating for patient-centred care models that prioritize individual needs and preferences will ensure a more dignified experience for those at the end of life.

As we confront the complexities of death, it’s vital to advocate for systemic improvements that can benefit many others facing similar situations. My father’s journey, while filled with challenges, serves as a call to action for better practices in palliative care. We owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to ensure that no one must suffer unnecessarily in their final moments leading to their deaths.

This week Canada got a reminder of how ungraciously Donald Trump reacts when upstaged. Mark Carney gave a measured call for middle powers to push back against a rising hegemon; Trump, by contrast, rambled, blustered and kept issuing tariff threats after Canada sought new markets in China. He and Scott Bessent later claimed in a call that Carney had walked back his Davos remarks—hmmm. I wonder who’s not telling the truth. Trump also threatened to decertify Canadian made jets in the U.S. unless Canada relaxed safety rules to approve newer Gulfstream models.

All this unfolded as protests over ICE brutality peaked, prompting a partial retreat to “de‑escalate a little bit,” and the removal of Greg Bovino, a MAGA hardliner known for wearing SS style trench coats. The news cycle quickly moved on to fresh distractions: street protests in Minneapolis, renewed sabre rattling toward Iran, another batch of Epstein files, and a documentary about Melania that barely raised an eyebrow. But enough of that nonsense, let’s examine the week that was in editorial cartoons.

Tuesday, January 27, 2026 — Middle Powers, Major Push

At Davos last week, Mark Carney urged middle powers to unite against unilateral hegemonic moves, calling out Donald Trump’s use of tariffs for short‑term gain and urging countries to work together to avoid longer‑term global instability as power shifts. Carney, often the smartest person in the room, has a knack for coining phrases I call “Mark Carneyisms,” think “purpose‑built,” “hinge moment,” and the British‑styled “catalyse.” Expanding our vocabulary is one of the fringe benefits of having Carney as a leader; last week’s revival of “hegemon” inspired the cartoon above. I tried to squeeze in as many of Trump’s most notorious loyalists. I forgot Kash Patel, Ted Nugent, and Tom Holman. If I had waited a day or so I probably would’ve included Nicki Minaj as well. Next time, I guess.

Wednesday, January 28, 2026 — Pizza Diplomacy

Ontario’s Doug Ford and Mark Carney buried their dispute over Chinese EV imports at a symbolic pizza meeting with Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, signalling a provincial‑federal realignment to protect Canada’s auto sector and blunt destabilizing U.S. tariff pressure. I try to sketch one “Young Doug Ford” episode each month, and by late December I was scraping the barrel for anything newsworthy—he and his government were still on an extended Christmas break; he must have felt his Captain Canada cape slipping after that embarrassing rant about pulling Manitoba’s Crown Royal Rye from LCBO shelves, and later he aimed at Danielle Smith for cozying up to Alberta separatists, so it looks like he’s trying to rehab his reputation.

Thursday, January 29, 2026 — Scandals on Shuffle

The Minneapolis ICE controversy revealed a playbook of escalation, disinformation and quick de‑escalation that turns serious events into fleeting headlines, showing the need for sustained civic pressure and stronger institutions to preserve accountability. I tried to stay focused on domestic affairs, but by Wednesday Minnesota dominated the news and even spawned the phrase “massive armada heading for Iran,” which promises more speculation; it takes time to move battleships across the globe, so expect more announcements as the story is milked. Someone praised the chronicling for this cartoon and suggested I create a useful calendar—an idea I might take up.

Friday, January 30, 2026 — Oil, Allies and Allegiances

With Alberta separatism drawing international attention and reported contacts with U.S. officials, Premier Danielle Smith is under pressure to reaffirm her commitment to Canada as oil geopolitics and foreign interest deepen internal divisions. A bit of drama unfolded when the premiers met the Prime Minister in Ottawa at a First Ministers’ meeting. B.C. Premier David Eby accused separatist backers of treason after comments on Sunday talk shows that echoed Mark Carney’s warning about foreign interference, while Smith declined to condemn efforts to seek foreign funding and appears willing to put Alberta’s future to a referendum. As an aside, Wab Kinew joked about a Manitoba referendum with the choices “yeah” and “heck yeah.”

Saturday, January 31, 2026 — Crossroads of Credibility

Pierre Poilievre faces a leadership crossroads as links to Alberta separatism and perceived ties to the Trump wing make it harder to attract centrists; an upcoming leadership review will decide whether the party broadens its appeal or doubles down on its base, and as the cartoon suggests, the Liberals stand to gain the most from any Conservative turmoil around Poilievre.

RIP Catherine O’Hara

I usually resist joining the chorus and drawing a sentimental cartoon whenever an icon dies. People die and while deaths are always sad and newsworthy, it takes something major to derail the satirical beat. I didn’t stop doing my editorial cartoon when the news came across early Friday afternoon, but I was moved enough to sketch the portrait above. News of Catherine O’Hara’s sudden death hit me hard. Her humour brought decades of joy and belly laughs. I first discovered her at eight or nine, watching early SCTV episodes on Global in southern Ontario, and that introduced me to a remarkable cast I have followed for more than 50 years.

John Candy, who left us far too soon, was one of them, along with Harold Ramis and Joe Flaherty. Both Catherine O’Hara and Andrea Martin shone brightly with their unforgettable characters. For me, Catherine’s most memorable roles include Lola Heatherton (2) and Dusty Towne. I often revisit her iconic sketches, like her portrayals of Katharine Hepburn (2), Brooke Shields, Elizabeth Taylor, and the nerdy Margaret Meehan on Melonville Night School High Q, as well as her role as Dorothy KilPatrick from What’s My Shoe Size?

In recent years, her masterful performance as Moira in Schitt’s Creek showcased her incredible talent, but I also cherish her roles in Christopher Guest’s films - Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind - which remain some of my absolute favourites.

While she hailed from Canada, her comedic genius transcended borders, making her a true citizen of the world. The world has lost a remarkable talent. Rest in peace, Catherine O’Hara.

It was a week that moved from Davos warnings about big‑power bullying to local fights over trade, unity and political identity. The lesson: middle powers do better when they cooperate, and healthy democracies need active citizens to keep leaders and institutions honest. And amid the chaos we pause to mourn Catherine O’Hara, whose humour reminded us of our shared humanity. Next week will bring the usual buffet of outrage from the Trump machine. Hope does lie in the fact that the promise of Winter Olympics may bring with it temporary relief from the Trump show.

The old sayings, "this too shall pass" and "better times are ahead," echo like a modern-day Gregorian chant, intensifying like the suspenseful music of a psychological thriller, as Donald Trump's actions make the chaos feel more palpable than ever. Meant to comfort, these words now highlight the struggles with rising costs, foreign policy mistakes, and an apparent weakening of international order and the rule of law. While some hold on to hope or choose not to care, others watch in disbelief as drama unfolds at home and abroad. In the cold heart of Minnesota, ICE actions evoke fear reminiscent of the past. Yet, even this is overshadowed by a President’s reckless behaviour on the world stage, acting like a self-proclaimed ruler with divine right, turning both himself and the country into a global joke. If we can’t laugh, it’s to keep from crying, as one man’s actions change the course of history and rules based order, as noted by Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney in a powerful speech. Some old empires are finally beginning to push back. Let’s dive in to see how the world took a turn for the worse this week, thanks to one man. Try not to cry.

Tuesday, January 20, 2026 - Trump’s Greenland Gambit: A Chill in the Air

Donald Trump's ambitions in Greenland unsettled long-time U.S. allies, drawing parallels to Russia’s aggressive maneuvers. As Europe and markets reacted, Trump backtracked…err, TACO’d… on tariffs but insisted he's still got his eye on Greenland. This cartoon highlights the absurdity of Trump’s territorial aspirations, comparing them to Vladimir Putin’s, and underscores the importance of Canada’s role in standing firm with Europe to protect sovereignty and uphold international law. It's unclear how NATO ally Mark Rutte convinced the Trump toddler to abandon his Greenland pursuit, but for now, it seems to have worked as he shifts his short attention span to the next scheme to freak out the world.

Wednesday, January 21, 2026 - Cash and Chaos: The Trump Treasury Tactics

Karoline Leavitt is known as the official mouthpiece for the President and his circle of yes-men. Despite her irritating demeanor, reminiscent of an AI-generated avatar, she performs her role effectively. It was fun to include her alongside the two main Trump nepobabies. Inspired by a New York Times investigation, this cartoon delves into Trump’s strategic chaos, aimed at personal gain at the expense of global stability. From vanity documentaries to trading cards, court settlements, to cryptocurrency, Trump’s pursuit of money, for the Trump dynasty, appeasing the Christian-right, mixed with Project 2025 seems to be the main method behind all the madness.

Thursday, January 22, 2026 - Davos Drama: Trumpinomics Unleashed

Trump’s Davos speech, fraught with grievances and misinformation, became the theme for Thursday’s cartoon. His lack of self-awareness and confusion between Greenland and Iceland highlighted the risks of his leadership. “Trumpinomics,” characterized by divisive rhetoric and unpredictable policies, poses long-term threats to the U.S. economy and its global partnerships. A depiction of a dumpster fire is a common gag symbolizing the Trump era, but this week it's the reputation of the once-great United States that seems to burn. Trump's repeated claim of it being the "hottest country anywhere in the world" has a semblance of truth, unlike much of his diatribe to the Davos crowd.

Friday, January 23, 2026 - Board of Peace or Piece of Work?

I've received suggestions to draw a cartoon with the witty wordplay "Bored of Peace," but it feels too obvious. An adage among editorial cartoonists resonates with me: never go with the first gag that comes to mind. Predictably, “bored” wordplay was used in other places, so it's best to let others have the glory. I went with the comic book villain scenario. The unveiling of Trump’s “Board of Peace” offers a dubious alternative to the United Nations, requiring a $1 billion fee for membership. Despite support from some nations, key U.S. allies remain skeptical. "Canada lives because of the United States... remember that when you speak, Mark," Trump remarked in a withering way to Carney during his rambling speech at the WEF, before rescinding his invitation to join the assembly of tyrants and autocrats. Trump inadvertently did Carney a favour, allowing him to wear it as a badge of honour.

Saturday, January 24, 2026 - Carney’s Moment: A Doctrine for the Future

Mark Carney’s “Carney Doctrine” from Davos contrasts sharply with Trump’s chaotic visit, focusing on collaboration among middle powers. As Carney gains momentum, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre faces a leadership review amid outdated tactics. This moment offers Canada a choice between embracing progress or clinging to divisive politics.

As I often find myself apologizing for the focus on Trump, there are indeed pressing issues closer to home that usually capture my attention. However, ignoring such outrageous global events feels out of touch with reality. Notably, in every depiction of Trump, I've added Marina Corina Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize to his lapel. It's a nod to last week's absurd episode, serving as the ultimate symbol of a charlatan taking credit for others' hard work. This week’s comical spectacles are likely to be surpassed by even more astonishing developments next week. Who knows what surprises Donald Trump will pull from his top hat? Meanwhile, Pierre Poilievre’s leadership review looms, with the real intrigue lying not in a potential majority win, but in how the party grapples with its declining poll numbers and considers its future direction.

Going into the second week of 2026, the focus shifted toward events closer to home despite the constant circus to the south. Flood‑the‑zone tactics from U.S. politics pulled attention toward Venezuela, Greenland, Iran and ICE actions in Minnesota, sidelining big national stories in Canada as readers tracked the fallout from American instability and its knock‑on effects for trade and policy. Chrystia Freeland, Quebec Premier François Legault and Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie all announced departures in the past few days, but larger geopolitical currents won the focus for satire. The week’s cartoons trace that pressure, from geopolitical heat to performative provincial theatre to a choice about which threat matters most. This week was about diversifying Canada’s trade away from our closest neighbour and former friend to the south, and toward the far east and erstwhile foe, China. This isn’t Canada’s choice — it’s a consequence of Donald Trump’s policies.

There was no Tuesday cartoon from me this week. While puttering online over the Christmas break I discovered a serious case of intellectual property theft: historic caricature designs I sell on my website had been copied. I had to devote a full day to dealing with IP pirates and hammering out a strategy with a lawyer. I wrote about my latest challenge with Printerval here for those interested. Sadly, fighting the bad guys come with the territory as an artist whenever creative work like cartoons are uploaded to the Internet.

Wednesday January 14, 2026 — Canada between the U.S. and China

This oddball geology gag shows Earth’s core heated by Donald Trump, a fresh, original visual that captures how U.S. instability radiates across the globe. It turns geopolitical anxiety into a simple, readable image while highlighting Canada’s dilemma: pursue new trade opportunities or stand firm on ethical concerns.

Thursday January 15, 2026 — Crown Royal and provincial posturing

A near‑nude Emperor Has No Clothes riff on Doug Ford landed as political theatre and provocation. That cheeky depiction triggered adult‑content warnings on some platforms, but the point was clear: performative acts of economic nationalism risk distracting from substantive issues and undermining national cohesion. Wab Kinew’s inclusion reinforced a steadier, more pragmatic strand of leadership. Reminder: A new Young Doug Ford episode is begging to be drawn.

Friday January 16, 2026 — Choosing which monster to fear

A classic editorial device puts the public’s dilemma front and centre: which is worse, an unpredictable U.S. in decline or a rising China? The cartoon distills the core worry and forces a tradeoff, showing how editorial cartoons can make complex policy choices immediately graspable.

Friday March 28, 2025 — archived: EVs rising from the rubble

An archived piece from last year of Trump smashing Canada’s auto industry now reads as prophecy. EVs from China and Europe sprouting from the wreckage provide apt context for the current debate about supply chains and the green transition.

Saturday January 17, 2026 — Carney, China and the red hat

Mark Carney’s pivot toward China is framed with irony: America First ends up helping China. The red hat reading “Make China Great Again” is a sharp jab that ties the week together and highlights unintended consequences of U.S. policy.

U.S. volatility heats the global stage and Canada must decide between pragmatic engagement and principled resistance. The takeaway is urgent but simple: choices made now will shape Canada’s economic and ethical standing for years, so the conversation needs to move beyond spectacle and into strategy. But with the unpredictable man in the White House, strategy can prove all too temporary.

If the first full week of 2026 were a dinner party, Donald Trump showed up late, grabbed the spotlight, spilled the punch, and rearranged the seating chart to suit his taste while everyone else tried to salvage the conversation. The cartoons this past week serve as place cards for a foreign policy built on spectacle, transaction and short term gain rather than law, alliances and lasting stability. It began with Venezuela, swept through Greenland, and ended with Iran, a vast country once allied to the U.S., framed by small nations wounded by years of oppressive rule. Let’s dive in to this very much dizzying start to 2026.

Tuesday January 6, 2026: The Liberation of Oil

Trump’s intervention in Venezuela reads less like a democracy drive and more like an oil-first regime change, removing Nicolás Maduro risks installing a U.S. puppet, reviving extractive hemispheric doctrines, alienating allies, and distracting from larger strategic threats such as Russia and China, thereby undermining international order and domestic priorities. The relief in Venezuela is understandable, but the future is uncertain — one bad regime may simply be replaced by another, so the suffering could continue.

Wednesday January 7, 2026: Neighbours in Crosshairs Heavy-handed U.S. economic and military pressure has strained ties with Canada. Tariffs, job losses, and talk of annexation feel coercive, not cooperative, so Canada must strengthen deterrence, find new partners, and rely on international law to push back. Trump’s “America First” approach revives old imperial thinking and, in his words, rejects limits like international law. And thus the "Donroe Doctrine" is born.

Thursday January 8, 2026: Theatre in the North, Tests in the East

Trump’s Greenland stunt showed Europe’s post‑ceasefire promises for Ukraine are mostly talk, not readiness. Symbolic gestures can’t replace clear timelines, weapons in place, binding small‑state pacts, ways to prove attacks, and stronger mobilization to deter aggression. It became clearer this week that the world is a playground dominated by a cast of reckless bullies. Europe’s legal focus is increasingly mismatched to how aggressors operate—sometimes rules matter, and sometimes you must respond firmly.

Friday January 9, 2026: Flooding the Feed, Drowning the Plan

A "flood the zone" tactic risks wasting political capital, alienating allies, sowing domestic chaos, and obscuring goals — suggesting something larger may be unfolding. With the clock running on the first half of this unconventional presidency, 2026 is already delivering shocks that would have once sounded like cynical fantasy. Consider the recent rhetoric from J.D. Vance, Stephen Miller, and Marco Rubio: it hints at the kind of surprises the world may now have to reckon with.

Early 2026 actions, like meddling in Venezuela and backing selected protests, reflect an America First approach that may hurt rivals briefly but risks long-term instability, double standards on unrest, and a weakening of international norms that could reshape global and domestic politics.

If foreign policy is theatre, this week was a one man show with a shaky script and no understudies, and the rest of the world is left holding the props.

During that odd time between Christmas and the New Year, and in the days following, with time off work, gloomy weather, and battling various flu bugs, like many, I’ve found myself succumbing to cabin fever. In between binge-watching streaming media, I’ve been exploring the internet, turning over metaphorical rocks to reveal the slimy critters feeding on intellectual property. This year, I dared to uncover the Temu rock, only to find a swarm of unauthorized reproductions of my designs. So many designs, including several featuring British and English royalty, protected by Canadian copyright, has been pirated and is accessible through a simple keyword search on Temu, despite not granting any permission for its use.

There are hundreds of violations, easily found with a few keystrokes.

Temu seller ZenithVogue L ran my (authorized) illustration, “The Kings and Queens of England and Britain,” through an AI image generator — turning original art into one of those yellowed, unsigned images you see everywhere now, especially on Substack, where many non-artist creators reach large audiences. Apparently 19K+ of these makeup bags have been sold. Consumers sure love the slop.

As an artist, I’ve been relentlessly protecting my work from IP theft on marketplaces like AliExpress, which are flooded with counterfeit and pirated products supported by willing buyers and permissive payment processors. Since August 2024, I’ve taken down 900 infringing listings. While I’m glad my designs are largely cleared from the platform now, the effort has consumed an immense amount of my time with no compensation.

AliExpress claims to remove repeat offenders, but my investigations reveal otherwise. This may hold true for trademarks and other violations, but when it comes to artist IP violations, there are no real penalties for sellers. Designs often disappear only to reappear later, making this a frustrating game of whack-a-mole.

Copyright law is supposed to protect creators from unlawful reproduction of their work. However, the burden falls on us, the artists, to enforce our rights by vigilantly monitoring sites and marketplaces like AliExpress and now Temu. This ongoing battle underscores the need for stronger protections and more accountability from these platforms.

Above all, it’s up to consumers here and in the so-called Western world to stop supporting these sites. While prices may be low, the quality of the merchandise is terrible. In the days and weeks ahead, I’ll be doing battle with Temu, but I plan to have some fun with it and look forward to sharing the journey in my Saturday newsletters. Happy New Year!
